I guess the point of priniting back to tape is to save compression time in
iDVD.
Since this is done in real time, times two to move it back to the computer, I
wonder how much time it actually saves over letting iDVD chew on the files
overnight. It also requires user attention at several stages in the process.
Annother advantage of the system is that it doens't require an internal
"superdrive" as does iDVD.

I guess the gadget is still very useful for slapping analog video on dvd without
much editing. The price is right too. And there are ways to expand mepg 2
files to DV format for editing once they are on the computer. Also, the system
requires a lot less storage space on the computer than DV since only compresssed
files appear on the computer.

On the other hand, standalone dvd recorders are coming down in price, not much
more than the instant dvd itself, and these record directly to the disk in real
time. No additional steps.

Since it's clear that video can be compressed in real time using specific
hardware (tivo as well as InstantDVD)) what we really could use is software
that would access outboard hardware to do it for iDVD and similar apps. Or even
an app that would record direct to dvd within the compputer.

My system works fine for putting analog on DVD, but it's slow and there's so
much tape to archive. That's why instant DVD or a stand alone recorder is
tempting to me.
