IMHO those useless modules are actually all I need for managing my
accounts and for simple database tasks, like storing the dozens of
software license codes that I get via email or at the back of manuals, etc.

iWorks looks like work in progress - it seems like a strange combination
and I'm sure the two modules will be added to in the future. For now, at
least, AppleWorks is still on sale.

I hope your last comment was tongue-in-cheek - as much as people like
pointing out how good the educational discounts are for Office, etc., I
cannot take advantage of these offers and so the Excel/Filemaker
combination is pretty expensive.
