Dear G-List:

I have a customer with an older Power Mac G3 running OS 9.1, a Lexmark C720 (which has an ethernet port), and a
D-Link DI-604 router. When the printer is directly connected to the computer, the printer works flawlessly. When the
printer is connected through the router, the computer cannot see the printer. What needs to be set either in the
router or within the OS itself so that the computer can recognise the printer while connected to the router?

Roland :)

This sounds like you have cross-over cable to connect the computer to the printer. Ethernet connectors come in two types, those on the hub/switch and those on the computer/printer/etc. To connect a computer to a printer you use a cross-over cable. To connect between a switch/hub and computer/printer you use a straight-through or 'normal' cable. Also, you say you are attempting to connect them to a 'router'. Just to make sure, you should be connecting both the computer and printer to the 'switch' side of the router and the uplink port to your modem. A good reference I have found is Three Macs and a Printer <http://www.atpm.com/network/>.
