Huh? I'm not sure what you're saying here...
If you run Utilities> Directory Access, you can click on the SMB item in the list (you may need to authenticate) and set your workgroup and enter a WINS server, if you have one.
Then you can browse your network...
and it tries to connect for around 2 mins at which point it brings up the username/password.
I get that occasionally; I've not been able to figure out the problem. Most of the time it comes up straightaway.
