It doesn't sound like this hack would work for the situation where the internal drive is hosed, and I want to "boot" from my firewire drive backup and clone back to the internal. That's the primary reason I'd want to boot from firewire. Or would this still be likely to work because the helper part of the drive would be separate from the rest?

Also, does this XPostFacto helper drive thing work with the Blue & Whites too, or just the Beiges?

Actually, Bruce is mistaken (a real rarity). I'm typing this on a Beige rev.3 booted from a Maxtor 120 GB external Firewire drive. You can't boot from Firewire directly, you must use XPostFacto 3.0 and select the "helper drive" boot process in the "XPF Options" window.

Did you actually read the rest of my comment?

I mentioned that, as well as my rationale for not calling it 'booting'. You're not booting the computer from the firewire drive, you're booting from the internal, and handing over the os loading to the firewire drive.

Functionally this is equivalent to lilo in a Linux system.

If you don't believe this, remove the boot sector from your internal drive and see how well this works.

While it's a convenient hack, if something happens to the internal drive, you're borked until you fix the internal drive, install an os on it, re-install XPF and reboot from your main drive.

Hope you saved the XPF installer somewhere.
