You need a decoder if you are running anything less than OS X. You
will also need a PCI video card, if it doesn't have one, and some of
the lower end PCI video cards do not support DVD movie playback so you
will have to do some further research on that. Check at

I'm not sure this is true. If it's a rev 3 motherboard and a rev C rom (they
were sold together) and the drive is original, it would have hardware decoding
on the wings card. There were three av wings cards. The second had a direct
cable connection to the dvd drive, the third not. But both had hardware
decoding. I'm not sure what software was required but it would not be a recent
dvd player which decodes through software and requres a fairly fast processor
and maybe a video board. Maybe not if it is a rev 3 motherboard.

I've come up with all this from reserch a couple of years ago in trying to get
the DVD a/v wings card to work on a rev 1 mb. Forget it.

Also, forget trying to get qny of this to work in X. On a beige, you'd need a
video card and a procssor upgrade to play DVDs. Maybe an original 300mhz g3
could do it. Mine is now 466 G4 with a Rqdeon 7000 aand it all works.

Hope this helps a little, anyway.
