Two other options you might try:
1) Drag the applications folder down to the right side of the dock near the
trash and by clicking on it for a second or two a list of apps will appear
and you can select whichever one you want
That's indeed a handy tip, Tim!
BTW DragThing is a good app aswell, I used to use it a lot in OS 9.
2) Fruitmenu by Unsanity.com, brings back the OS 9 Apple Menu
Even easier, if you have OS X Panther installed then in the Classic System Preferences there's an option to show the status of Classic in the Menu Bar. What it also shows then is the Apple Menu of the selected Classic System Folder. If you drop some aliasses in that folder, you'll have access to them via the Menu Bar :)
