Hi there, me again after a long absence. I have just taken the plunge and
bought Jaguar, after running happily in 9 for quite a while. The water is a
good deal colder than I thought it was going to be.

I have 2 physical hard drives, one of which I added to serve as a general
backup, and the other of which has been in three equal 4G partitions (this is
how it came to me as a gift last winter). I installed Jaguar onto the same
partition where the OS 9 system folder was located. When I got going, it turned
out that Jaguar could not find any of the applications I have been using, which
were on a different partition. So I wiped the partitions out and re-installed,
after backing everything up again. I was under the (apparently mistaken)
impression that the Classic environment would install automatically from
somewhere within Jaguar, but when I tried to import mailboxes from OE into
Mail, the system told me there is no Classic installed.

So: Do I somehow re-install 9 now "underneath" Jaguar, or do I wipe the drive
again and reinstall 9, then re-install Jaguar, or something else?

I also assume I will have to re-install all the applications rather than just
dragging them from the backup disc?

Two other things: I read somewhere the other day that Norton Utilities should
not be used in OS X, period. I had been using version 5, and wonder if the
basic repair (Disk Doctor) and optimize (Speed Disk) functions I have been
using are now available within the OS or should I get something else, or is it
OK to stick with what I have?

And does anyone here have any experience with OpenOffice or (I think)
NeoOffice, and is there an open-source version of Acrobat? Since the computer
was free to me a year ago and had a bunch of stuff already installed, I do not
have the original install discs, so in my ongoing quest to spend as little
money as humanly possible, I am thinking that open source might work, since I
don't do much that is terribly out of the way.

As always, my sincere thanks for all offers of help!
