Depending on your answers to these questions, you may be able to replace the backed up files without any reinstalls. Are your backups of the old volumes direct, accessible copies or in some proprietary format (such as Dantz)? Did you make the backups before or after installing OS X? Did you back up the three partitions separately? If one partition held the system and another the applications, what was on the third?

I have 2 physical hard drives, one of which I added to serve as a general backup, and the other of which has been in three equal 4G partitions (this is how it came to me as a gift last winter). I installed Jaguar onto the same partition where the OS 9 system folder was located. When I got going, it turned out that Jaguar could not find any of the applications I have been using, which were on a different partition. So I wiped the partitions out and re-installed, after backing everything up again. I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that the Classic environment would install automatically from somewhere within Jaguar, but when I tried to import mailboxes from OE into Mail, the system told me there is no Classic installed.
So: Do I somehow re-install 9 now "underneath" Jaguar, or do I wipe the drive again and reinstall 9, then re-install Jaguar, or something else?
I also assume I will have to re-install all the applications rather than just dragging them from the backup disc?
Two other things: I read somewhere the other day that Norton Utilities should not be used in OS X, period. I had been using version 5, and wonder if the basic repair (Disk Doctor) and optimize (Speed Disk) functions I have been using are now available within the OS or should I get something else, or is it OK to stick with what I have?
