Hello all, I have a very strange issue to report (at
least very strange to me). This will be a very long
post, just to warn you!
Anyway, for Christmas I got a 128MB Lexar Jump-Drive
Secure. I wanted it so I could easily take files from
work (nice network connection) home (where I have no
internet connection). The thing worked perfectly in
PCs.
Last week, I sold my PC and converted to a strictly
Mac environment at home (YAY!!!). I bought a Rev. 2
B&W. The machine came with OS 9.1 preinstalled. As
always, I was able to move files from work to home
with the JumpDrive without any issues. I did this for
a few days with no issues. I could plug in the
JumpDrive and it would mount on the desktop and when I
was ready to remove it, I would drag the mounted
volume into the trash and remove the drive from the
USB port (I assume this is the correct way to do it?)
Well, I decided to upgrade to 9.2.2. I downloaded the
9.2.1 and 9.2.2 update files and took them home on my
JumpDrive and transferred them to my Mac. I then
updated my Mac with these files. After this, I notice
my CD-ROM acting up (it could have been acting up
before this, but I hadn't really used it until this),
so I spent a couple of nights dealing with this and
never plugged up the JumpDrive.
On Monday, I plugged my Jumpdrive in and my machine
froze completely. I could move the mouse pointer
around the screen, but I couldn't click on anything.
The keyboard would also not function. A hard reboot
(by pulling the power cord out) fixed the issue, but
now every time I plug in the JumpDrive, the machine
would lock like this.
Frustrated, I thought OS 9.2.2 may be the culprit, so
I completely reformatted my HD and put a fresh copy of
9.1 back on the machine. To my dismay, plugging the
JumpDrive in after this caused the same affect of
freezing. Frustrated, I shut the machine down and
tried again to no avail. I then had a thought, why
not put the JumpDrive in and then boot the machine up.
I tried this and happily found it mounted on the
desktop after booting! After looking though, I had
two icons for the drive. I moved one to the trash, so
it was only mounted once on the desktop. From here, I
was able to get my files off the drive with no issues.
I then removed the JumpDrive as I had in the past and
shut the machine down. I restarted the machine with
the JumpDrive in again and it worked again. So, I was
happy with this. I don't mind losing the hot swap
ability of the JumpDrive, as long as it works.
Last night I went to my mother-inlaws house to
download some more files. I did this an dloaded them
on my JumpDrive. When I got home last night, I put
the JumpDrive in my machine and booted it up. TO my
dismay again, the mac locked on on the Mac OS 9.1 boot
screen, just before the extensions started to load.
The progress was at about 1/4" on my monitor at
1024x768. No extensions had loaded yet. Frustrated,
I restarted the machine with extenisions off and it
locked at the same point (this time I can no longer
move the mouse pointer). Removing the Drive and
rebooting results in a correct boot with no problems.
It still does the same thing if I try to attach the
drive while the machine is already running.
Anyone have any ideas? This is very strange fo rit to
be working and within one week go to partially working
and then to not working at all. The JumpDrive still
functions perfectly in PCs (I have it plugged into my
work PC right now putting some file son it). I know
the USB ports are good on the Mac, becauase the
keyboard and Mouse O have are USB and they work fine
without the Drive plugeed in. I tried plugging the
JumpDrive into the keyboard and directly into the back
of my B&W with no change. Any ideas
Worth mentioning, but probably not related, my CD-ROM
drive is shot, so I have a new DVD-ROM/CDRW drive on
the way.
I'm sorry for such a long post, but I really need to
get this thing working to move files. Thanks for any
suggestions.
Jason
