CD-R or CD-RW for Backups?

I've been using CD-Rs for backing up my data because the disks are 
cheap.  A couple years ago, some folks on this list favored CD-Rs.  But 
CD-RW disks can be used over and over.

What are the tradeoffs?  For short-term backups against disaster on the 
hard drive, to retain the archive for a few months, is using CD-RW 
disks over and over as dependable as using the one-time CD-Rs?  If 
there is more risk, does anyone here factor in the cost?
