I will use it for ordinary things, keeping finances, internet, email,
digital camera pictures, writing letters. As you can see, I don't do
anything elaborate.

Then going for a G4 unit is overkill for your needs. If you have $500-600 to spend, by all means get a mini - you'll love all the uses you discover for it. But if you're budget-conscious you can get a nicely configged G3 iMac, or even a Blue & White, for under $200. Either one would be a vast improvement over a Beige G3 and will run OS X quite capably, and with none of the headaches inherent to running X on Old World architecture. They may stil be "just a G3" but practically speaking the difference is like night and day.
