Yeah, I don't get this "permissions" stuff either, and why they need "repairing." Just more cryptic 'puter stuff, as far as I'm concerned, but what the heck, this OS has so many advantages over 9 that it's worth the hassles. Mainly, IT DOESN'T CRASH. Not for me anyway (knocking on wood). I've had so many long productive hours without crashes--now THAT'S an OS. What irks me is sometimes being told by this OS that I don't have "permission" to open or modify something---hey, I'm the only guy who ever uses this computer---why do I have to give myself permission to do things here?

Actually, you're not the only user on the system. You might be the only *human* who uses it, but there are many system tasks being run by many system users, most notably root's nightly cron jobs.

What really irritates me is opening a Photoshop doc. or audio file, altering it, and then not being able to save the changes because it "doesn't belong" to me, it belongs to the "system" or something. How did that happen? So then I have to close everything up and go looking at everything's GET INFO to see who "owns" it and who has permission to use or modify it, then change it all to me--geez. Aside from that sort of stupidity,

Really, it's not stupidity - it's like this on EVERY Unix system out there. System files are readable by the system for a reason, and if you go in and mess with them, unless you know what you're doing you can really mess up your system.

this OS has all kinds of little conveniences, large and small, like the Preview you can get of either graphics or audio files, without opening any apps. Some things I discover purely by accident, like when I accidentally hit the F11 key and watched in amazement as all the windows scooted off to the side to show me the desktop. Neat! And F9 shrinks all the windows down so you can see everything you've got open. Aside from those nifty tricks, I can do all sorts of operations at the same time in this OS. If a Final Cut clip needs to do a long render, or an audo CD or a video DVD is being burned, I can go surf the net or do something else in the meantime. Hey, I'll live with all the little irritations to get all this stability, multi-tasking, and other really nifty stuff! I can reboot into 9, but when I do, I can't wait to get back to 10!

I totally agree that Expose is very cool - I use it all the time. I hate it when I have to use an OS such as Windows (very rarely) or Jaguar that doesn't have Expose... I don't know how I ever lived without it.
