I tried several burners (DVD/CD-R/RW) in my B&W, and while I couldn't burn or boot from them, at least they =would= read CD media. You might try setting the drive for "cable select" (CS) mode... don't know if the B&W/OS supports this, but at this point, it couldn't hurt.
