I don�t see any reason to upgrade to X.2.8 if it will allow you to upgrade from X.2 right to X.3.
Since it is a complete version upgrade it should be fine. It�s similar to all the updates for OS X 3, you can install the combo update and the will include all the intermediate updates. Good luck.
