Is the difference only the speed or the power it will supply?

In my 233 MHz G3 MT running 8.6 is a working two-port USB card; how do I tell which version it is?
Wether or not the card is 1.1 or 2.0, OS 8.6 only supports 1.1. So even if the card is a 2.0, you will only get 1.1 speeds out of it.
Do not get a 2.0 peripheral to run on it.
AFAIK, the only difference is the speed 480Mbps verses 12Mbps
