Wayne, yes it is normal.  Macs don't usually have VGA monitor ports on them.  
You can probably locate a Mac-VGA adapter plug that will convert the Mac video 
signal into something that the VGA monitor can read.  Otherwise, find yourself 
a video card like the iX3D Twin-Turbo card made by iXMicro.  Will be an eBay 
item most likely.
