No intel Mac could run anything ever written for the Mac in the past. Any company who wanted to serve the Mac market would have to stock *two* versions of software, and frankly, I think most of them would say 'fsck it, I'm outta here. It's not worth it.'

What's you take on the Transitive rumor that Apple is in negotiations? That might solve the 2-versions/emulation problem. Have you heard how the Silicon Graphics implementation is?

My take is that Apple JUST SWITCHED to the G5's...they're not going to switch to another CPU, certainly not for their consumer systems, and CERTAINLY not for the Mac Mini. It's only been shipping for a few months. The Mini, moreover, isn't constrained by CPU speed, but by HDD and Video subsystems.

As 7200 RPM 2.5" drives come into more widespread availability it's a logical step for apple to move to those.

However, much like Intel makes things other than CPU's ; Apple needs more than CPU's to make their systems.

Apple going to Intel Itaniums (surely they're not going to go BACK to a 32 bit CPU like the Pentium, are they?) PLUS adding in these magical translator chips would make Macs MORE expensive, not less, for a dubious increase, maybe, in processor speed.

The main thing to think about is this: What would Apple POSSIBLY gain from moving to Itanium?

They're not cheaper than G5's, they're only marginally faster, there's no indications that Apple is constrained on G5 supply, and this move would alienate a lot of customers.

Motorola is prepping the dual-core G4's, which run at much lower power than Intel's laptop chips, which will give dual-processor power to Apple's next generation of Powerbooks. When those move up, then iBooks and the Mini will move up to the current CPU's those use.

But hey, I also though the Mini was not going to happen; it did. So far the people running Apple have done a pretty damned good job of it since Steve Job's return...if Jobs does announce a move like this, they'll have done their homework.
