New Intel-based Macs to make their appearance next year. Software will be distributed in a "FAT" fashion to run on either. Existing PowerPC binaries will actually be able to run on the Intel-based systems via something called "Rosetta", which is described as "dynamic binary translation" or something like that.
Hey, I think this is good news, especially with regard to Powerbooks - there was no future in site for the Powerbook based on PowerPC. The G5 showed no signs of being portable, and the G4 is pretty much a dead-end. Apple has to switch to Intel in order to produce a viable laptop. Of course you have to wonder why they didn't go with AMD which seems to be getting the better press, but then if they are going with Intel there is nothing that should stop them from later choosing to use some AMD processors too, at least I wouldn't think so.
