New Intel-based Macs to make their appearance next year. Software
will be distributed in a "FAT" fashion to run on either. Existing
PowerPC binaries will actually be able to run on the Intel-based
systems via something called "Rosetta", which is described as
"dynamic binary translation" or something like that.
Hey, I think this is good news, especially with regard to Powerbooks
- there was no future in site for the Powerbook based on PowerPC. The
G5 showed no signs of being portable, and the G4 is pretty much a
dead-end. Apple has to switch to Intel in order to produce a viable
laptop. Of course you have to wonder why they didn't go with AMD
which seems to be getting the better press, but then if they are
going with Intel there is nothing that should stop them from later
choosing to use some AMD processors too, at least I wouldn't think
so.
From the chatter I've seen from being online when the news broke is
that AMD is more of a gamble on delivery and innovation than Intel is.
They don't want to jump right back into another motorola/ibm type
limitation. They've had a port of OS X running since the beginning, a
new one for each version, for over 5 years.
My guess is that with the 'universal binary' they mentioned, it will
be pretty simple to go to any other processor in the future, including
AMD.
AMD is better at marketing than development.
I know this is a decision that had years of thought put into it, you
can bet they've done their homework.

Well, OPENSTEP, from whence OS X came, was ported to Intel and other
platforms. I'm sure they just kept up the Intel port over the years.
The "universal binary" thing was around back then too - it was known as
"fat binaries" or "MABs" (Multi-Architecture Binaries). An application
could be compiled for any of the architectures, and the same bundle
would run on any of them.
