OS 9.2.2 IE 5.02, been stable for over a year

Well that 'could' be the reason if you don't show subscriptions in the IE Prefs. While I don't recall the details of version 5.02, I suspect it may not have provided the option of turning off Subscriptions but I thought it did. Have you made sure all the little option arrows are turned down in Prefs Folder - 'Web Browser' selection?

Also, a simple zap pram or cuda could have reset your prefs to check subscriptions automatically.
