FIREWIRE? in very short terms, please - I have only dial
up.

Firewire is a fast peripheral connection that Apple (among others) developed to replace SCSI for external peripheral connections that needed to transfer large amounts of data quickly like hard drives, CD and DVD writers, Scanners, DV cameras and such.
