Old owner had this FIREWIRE thing in place - WHAT IS FIREWIRE? in very short terms, please - I have only dial up.

Also known as IEEE 1394 or Sony's iLink, Firewire is the (new) external interface (bus) that replaced SCSI in newer Macs. It's for all sorts of external peripherals - hard drives, scanners, video cameras, etc. It's faster than the old SCSI. And it's hot-swappable -- which means you can plug and unplug devices without rebooting.

Here's the basic specs:

Firewire 1 is 400 Mbps. Firewire 2, in the newest Macs, is 800 Mbps. The current specification lets them ultimately go to 3.2 Gbps.

It uses thin/flexible 9-pin cables, which carry up to 60 watts. This means that low-power devices such as hard drives and cameras don't also need wall-warts.

You can have up to 63 devices per bus (chain). And the cables can be up to 4.5m (14+ feet!) between each device.

None of my computers (a beige G3 among them, with a USB 2.0/FireWire/Fast Ethernet combo card installed) will boot from a FireWire device.

For the most part, Apple doesn't let you boot from a device unless its bus came with the Mac originally on the motherboard; it's a driver issue. A few 3rd party vendors have cards that "fake" being original-Apple equipment, so they'll work on boot.
