Greetings,
One word of caution, if you want to run OSX on a G3/266 beware that
this release is not intended for this machine and is not supported by
Apple. If you must move into the OSX world, first visit
http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/ (Other World Computing) OWC and
get a copy of XPostFacto 4 which is a loader for "OS X for Legacy Macs"
I have installed "OS X" 10.3 on my G3/266 Desktop and it runs great for
a while and then locks-up. By locks-up I mean that the display goes
blank and will not come back. The only way out of this condition is to
use the power switch or pull the plug.
I have read that one of the problems could be the Video chip, or the
amount of memory or perhaps the need for a faster drive, as "OSX" does
a lot of active memory swapping with reserved space on the hard drive.
The reserved space is where the operating sys (the Core) stores
programs when it needs active RAM for other operations.
So if you decide to install "OSX" you may become very unsatisfied,
which would be very unfortunate as "OSX" 10.3 is a great operating
system. I use it on my G4 and will in install 10.4 very soon.
Best Regards,

if you have learned and are handling OS 9 (with all of
it's many short comings OS X is really easy ...in fact
their is a really great "lettle' book called "the Mac
OS X Conversion Kit - 9 to X - 9 to 10 side by side"
by Scott Kelby (Peachpit Press) $29.95 US.
this book shows you in photo's of each and every
function in detail. You are shown a OS 9 function on
the left hand side of the book and the same function
using OS X on the right hamd side of the book ...its a
great reference.
I moved over to OS X about 2 years a ago with great
fear. I had upgraded to a Quicksilver from a Mac such
as yours, so as to make the move to OS X easier and to
give me a better platform to grow from. I had
everything set up so I could use OS X and also give me
with a way to fall back to OS 9 when i needed to ...to
date I HAVE NEVER NEEDED TO FALL BACK TO OS 9 FOR ANY
REASON!
your never too old to use your mind to better your lot
and at our ages it's good to your our minds as much as
we can

I am a neophyte so the questions asked may seem simple, but complicated
for me.
Have just purchased a "new" to me:
G 3/300
OS 9.2
320 MB
9 Gig HD
Would I gain anything to upgrade to the highest OS? I think it is 9.3.
I still have my
G 3/ 266
OS 9.1
192 MB
6 Gig HD
One in the garage and one in the house.
I stick with OS 9 due to my age. I'm 74 and think OS X might be beyond
my learning curve. Difficult to teach old dog new tricks.
I'm 69 and OSX is easy to learn. The Help File is great if you don't
remember how to get something done.
