I know you are out there, somewhere, and I need your help. I'm looking
to build a small circuit of some kind which will sense whether AC is
present or not and if it goes off, then a program which will shut down
my beige G3 fileserver after say, five minutes or so. I know there are
newer UPS systems designed for this purpose, but my APC UPS is but a
couple of years old and I just bought a brand new battery for it! Call
me cheap, call me dumb, I don't care, I just would like to do this
project for something to do and to save a few bucks in the process. My
idea would involve a wallwart to keep the voltage low and a sensing
circuit which would provide a signal of some sort to the serial port.
The program would poll the serial port for that signal and If it is not
detected, a count would begin and continue until approximately 5
minutes has gone by and then proceed to safely shutdown the computer.
If the power comes back on before the 5 minutes are up, the counter
would be reset. I think most all of the newer sensing UPS systems use
USB for this process, but my old beige G3 doesn't have a USB card in
it, so I figured the serial port would work for the same purpose. So
how about it, anybody up to the challenge?

Just a message from Doug...

What port do you have on the APC? USB or PC serial? They used to have a 9 pin PC serial cord, with a Mac DIN serial plug on the other end of their
cords for my old APC unit... My current one uses USB.

I still have the old cord, if you're interested.

Pete

Nope, mine doesn't have any ports on it at all. As I told Bruce, it's an Office 280 model and it might be slightly older than I previously thought.

Just a message from Doug...
