Yeah, but its definitely my processor getting overwhelmed.

OS X is a piggy operating system. The Darwin kernel is fairly efficient, as *nix kernels go. But the crud that Apple has added on, Aqua and Quartz etc, is terribly inefficient. Apple has chosen to cover this by eliminating support for older/slower systems, and requiring it be run on a supercomputer-class machine. Think about that -- a Unix based OS that requires a supercomputer to run a *single user*?! :(

Quartz especially is problematic. It's tuned for systems with auxiliary graphics processors on AGP-based cards. Without that secondary processor, it's sluggish.

Going not just by "top", but by the chart in activity monitor. It happens while using a java app, from pokerroom.com. its an online poker game that ran very smooth is os 9, but now in os x while using this app it commonly uses over 50 percent of the processor.

Careful. The cat is smiling back at you. :)

When the CPU is doing something, it's doing it 100% of the time, during its whole time-slice (quanta). When your computer is only running a few active processes, it will tend to give them more quanta. Now look at the averaging done by the monitoring program, and its effect on the system its monitoring... IOW, it's all relative. :)

And Apple's java isn't very efficient, I'm told. Guys running apps on Xserves complain about it a lot. :\
