The best place to look for this info would be <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com> they have an extensive database of anecdotal evidence about all sorts of upgrades (I won't call them reviews because they're mostly like "I got X, it works ok in my system Y, this is what I had to do.")
Thanks, I'm looking it over now.
Stuff it full of memory first, then buy as fast a processor as you can get with the remaining money. With just 512 Mb you're going to really be choking those apps off, even with a fast processor.
I read that it requires a firmware update 2.4 fo OS 9 and over, in order to read more than 1.0 G memory (max is 1.5 g). But everything about it seems to be an OS 9.x thing (the firmware update installer causes Classic to start up), not OSX . I'm running Panther OS 10.3.9 right now, and have a free seeded Tiger (from ADC) ready to install as soon as I can borrow a DVD burner for backup.
Is the firmware update unnecessary for OSX? Or does it need to be there for Classic to see beyond 1.0g?
The PowerLogix 1.8gHz upgrade seems to be the most powerful one available for my model. That's as potent as I'll need I think.
