No OS.
With the machine off, pull the ring tab on the right side and open the
box. See if there is still a HD in the machine.
If there is, then it may have either been erased, corrupted, or broken.
This is an older machine in computer terms. Because of its age, I don't
think it's the right machine on which to base a decision whether or not
to switch to Mac. For example, although a Mac Mini has no internal
expansion other than some more RAM memory, performance-wise, the tiny
little guy will flat blow away _any_ B&W machine, even with maximum
upgrades.
Some good friends of mine who own a glass etching business, which is
already extremely cramped for space, have been using one under OS 9
with an Epson 1520 for creating custom photomask artwork under
PhotoShop 6, i.e., basically single-task oriented hardware. They just
recently bought a used Quicksilver for which they paid $900. Now they
have two huge machines which are basically single-task-oriented, will
never need internal expansion cards other than memory, etc. (and the
sticks may not be compatible between the two because of the difference
in bus speeds). The only real advantage, for them, of the slightly
newer machine is OSX, and a CD burner.
I'm suggesting they buy a Mini with a stackable HD for backup, a modern
LCD flat screen display, a decent commercial-grade laser printer, and
sell everything else. Then they'll have everything they'll need, and
gain a sizable chunk of precious office space they haven't been able to
use since they bought the business!
All the best,
Ken N.
