As for cable select, this is a throw back to
the old days when special cables with a twist were used to denote which
drive was which. As far as I know it's not used at all anymore.

Sorry Doug, not so. My relatively new G4 MDD uses cable select - says
so in the handbook. And the CD drive in my sawtooth wasn't recognized
until I set it to cable select.
