OK, how do I create these archives? I guess thats what I'm asking. I know in Outlook, there is a menu option to create an archive, but I haven't been able to find that in Mail. I would know what I'm searching for, so as long as spotlight can find it, thats fine. The main thing is to archive my deleted and sent items, they have thousands of emails in them. Thanks.

What I have done in the past with emails that I wish to save is just select the ones I want to save them locally in an archive....I can't tell you what format as I'm using the PC at work right now and don't have access to my Mac.....but I can tell you that with Tiger, you can search the archives and find anything you need, you just need to know 'what' you're looking for. Like I had a lot of product registrations saved in one of these archives. I knew the name of the app, typed it into spotlight and it found it in the archive (within seconds, I might add). Also, you can use Entourage, not Outlook on the Mac.....I use it on rare occasions (I don't like some of it's 'features') but I don't believe that it has the ability to archive any better than you can from the OS X mail app (I could be wrong).

I use the Mail.app included in X. I use it for an IMAP account for
my business. I have 2-300 individual folders, very organized, for
vendor and customer relations as well as product development/
research. As you can imagine, this is a HUGE mail file, well over
1GB. I don't delete anything. I keep everything sent or received.

I do this so that I can go back to reference old emails from
customers or vendors if needed.

Is there a way to archive some of these emails, say everything older
than 6 months? The only requirement is that I want to be able to
search this archive if needed. All of my IMAP mail is stored on the
server, but I'd like to keep the archive on my local machine that the
mail client runs on to conserve space on my web server.

Is there any way to do this? If would be nice to save space and
improve performance, only accessing the old stuff when needed. I
know I could do this with Outlook, but that was with a POP account, I
just saved the old archives
