I am using nothing more than a hub with my iMac running OSX and my PC running XP. I have a DSL comming into a Linksys hub and turn on sharing in system pref on the iMac. The worst that has happened is that I have to reboot the PC to see the connection. A router would be better, but a hub will work as long as the mac does the logon to the isp. I dont know if a cable modem will handle the ethernet connection different than the dsl does as output from the modem

OT - And I agree, the kid sounds like a real jerk and should be sent to Brat Camp to learn some respect for his Mom!!!
