I don't know about using a HD in the Zip bay. Among my friends/clients
I'm
maintaining their Macs, there are 5 DA's, all having 3 HD's, a Zip 250
and a
superdrive. Non of these have any heatproblem.
3+1+1 = 5 devices on the ata channels. The DA can only support 4
devices on it's native channels. In addition, there are no stock cables
to go from the motherboard to the third drive position and then up to
the DVD, I would need a custom cable. The empty zip bay is pre wired
for an additional device, so no additional expenditures.
I do have a pci slot fan for an overclocked MX4 64meg video card.

It never hurts, since the card runs hooter than stock since it is
overclocked.
Instead I would use a PCI-ATA card in that
slot. Faster as the sec. bus.
Yes, an ata card would be faster than the secondary bus, but my need is
for near line storage, not as a main drive. In addition, an ata card =
more money and I am just looking to throw a spare 40G HD in the space.
