I have been planning to use the LEM Swap List to dispose of my
trusty old B&W 350 and my Quadra 800, (anyone interested?) and since
most folks there require Paypal, I signed up for an account--listing
only a credit card, NOT a checking account, mostly because of the
credit card fraud protection. The shocker was when I got a fairly
well done phishing message just hours later, and two more over the
next day. I immediately contacted Paypay Security each time, and was
assured it was coincidental and that they have never been
compromised. Odd as it seemed, I have gotten no more phishes in the
weeks since, but I had never gotten one before, so I was very
suspicious.
I once bid on a camera on an eBay auction. I didn't win, but over the
next couple of days I received 2 different messages offering
too-good-to-be-true examples of the same camera model. Obviously
scumbags ARE trolling eBay's "secure" site, and I don't for a minute
doubt that they are doing likewise to PayPal.
PayPal was hacked once, too...
I have only bought through these sites, never sold. I have had no
problems. I use my creditcard only and leave NO money in my PayPal
account (what's not there can't be stolen by hackers).
And I get quite a few phishy messages from faked PayPal and bank
sites. PayPal says that it will NEVER ask for details in an e-mail
like that. I routeniely forward them to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
I did try to contact PayPal about the problems with their site using
OS9. No result. There's no way to contact them by e-mail. And I'm
certainly not going to phone them from NZ. That is the ONLY reason I
have installed OSX on my secoind HD... so that I can access PayPal.
Now that HD has "disappeared" from my system, which is for another
posting...
