For example, I had the same problem setting up my first wireless router. The normal setting for Shaw(in Canada)is: shawmail for both sending and receiving mail, as per my ISP's set up instruction. However, I could not receive any email until I change it to shawmail.vc.shawcable.net, which is the server plus the domain name.

Wow. I would never, ever instruct a user to put in just "shawmail" in any circumstances. I cannot believe that is the ISPs install instruction!

I don't agree with using a name like "shawmail", but there are some definate advantages to it.

Taking advantage of the way Resolver works is the way the 'net is supposed to be done! That's the whole point of having search domains!

eg1: You want customers on certain subnets to use certain server clusters. You tell them all to use "mail". Resolver prepends that to the DHCP-provided subdomain name, and you can handle repointing in DNS. Very easy.

eg2: You use Comcast at home and Earthlink or Verizon on the road with your laptop. You always fetch your email from the same place, but because of various blocks you need to dynamically change which smtp server you're using, based on which ISP you're connected. So you tell your email client to use "mail", and Resolver automagically ends up pointing you to the right smtp server every time!

- Dan.
