I discovered these drives (WD740GD) at the end of last year when we were replacing the primary CPU's in our retail operations. We use a "Point Of Sale" software system that moves a large amount of data from the CPU to the Cash register on each transaction.
The drives are very fast. The seek time is 4.5 ms, more than 60% faster than ATA, twice as fast as 7200 SATA, and slightly faster than most 10,000 SCSI ultra 320. http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/index/1,,,00.html The only drives that have a faster seek time at this point are the 15k SCSI Ultra 320 Fibre Channel, and a select few 10k Seagate's (Savvio 2.5" enterprise drives), but at three times the price. http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=3152878/skd=1/search =savvio If you have a need for a new SATA drive, I seriously recommend looking at this drive. Fast, Quiet, Reliable. The only down side is the 74Gb is the largest currently available. -- Wade A.
