<Well, I have used a sonnet G4 500 in one of these machines, it worked

I've never used one that fast.>

And Bruce Johnson writes:

<Sonnet has CPU upgrades up to 800-1000 Mhz for these systems I think.
Waste of money, IMO, but they have them.>

OK, I'm not spending any money for this -- the reason for the upgrade,
other than "yeah, this would be nice," is specifically the fact that it
WON'T cost me any money to make these improvements. My boyfriend recently
got access to discarded Macs he can dissect, and he offered to pull stuff
out of them to put in my G3 (another RAM increase is also on the agenda,
but we've done RAM before and only had Q's on the processor and USB card
issues) -- if only he can figure out what to pull that will both work and
not destroy my G3.

This being the case, with neither of us having seen a Sonnet before (at
least I've HEARD OF them from this list) -- in the event that one of
these dissected Macs has one, how would someone recognize it?

Next....

Daniel, on will a processor pulled from a B&W work in a Beige: <Possibly,
but it's hit or miss. I'd advise against it because you could do damage
to the beige or the cpu or both.>

Bruce, on the same subject: <absolutely. Because of differences in the
bus speed and CPU
multiplier, it will run at a different speed than in the B&W, but
that's it. You'll need to set the jumpers appropriately (see the OWC
link below) and press the cuda switch before starting back up.>

Sounds like conflicting information here.....maybe I should err on the
side of caution and tell my boyfriend that the processor has to come from
a Beige, huh? However.....since Bruce is such a guru here, :-) Bruce,
what's the difference between the bus speed and CPU multiplier of the
Beige and the B&W? And, by "it will run at a different speed [in the
Beige] than in the B&W," would that be slower or faster? This would be
for installation only, no overclocking.

Daniel: <I've never seen markings on OEM apple CPUs that told me
anything, but
I may not be reading it right. Anyone know defenitavely?>

Bruce, O Guru, can you answer this one? I get the feeling that the
majority of the discarded Macs my boyfriend is dissecting more likely
have "stock equipment" inside them.

Daniel again: <I've never had a heat problem with my upgrades. If you
overclocked you
might have to go with a fan, but the stock parts don't need it and the
upgrades will come with it if they do.>

Thank you. No overclocking is in the works; I plan to use the processor
"as is." We just wanted to know if a "regular" processor (i.e., not
overclocked) that's just faster than the 266 MHz in there now would heat
things up too much.

Bruce, on the USB card: <Yes. You may have to do a custom install from
your 9.2.2 disk to get
the USB drivers, or just re-apply the 9.2.2 combo updater. (USB and
Firewire drivers are present in OS 9, but they're not installed if no
USB or Firewire hardware is detected at system installation time.)>

Right, OK. I originally had 9.1 on this system (and have an install CD
for it). I kicked it up to 9.2.2 via the free Apple updates (went to
9.2.1 first, then 9.2.2), which I still have, both on my hard drive, and
backed up to a CD. So all I need to do here is "reinstall" 9.2.2 once the
USB card is installed and then my Beige will recognize it?

Thank you guys once again.
