Hi Listers,
I need some help with a B&W running 10.4.3 that constantly freezes
up. There is no rhyme or reason to when the panic happens, it just
does it. I might be opening a finder window for my apps, as it
populates the window, I see that sickening shade of dark grey color
the window. I might be getting mail--or have already gotten mail--in
Entourage, oops! There it goes again. I also have a number of
'unexpectedly quit' messages for various programmes, Mac or MS or
Open Source, it makes no difference.
What should I be looking for? Memory issues? IDE controller issues
(this is a rev 1 board). Hard drive issues?
I have attempted to ID one or two different memory chips, although I
have not done a wholesale swap. I have new ones coming from Omni
Technologies. But the memory I am using in this B&W is memory I used
in another without any issues. I have considered the HD and have
swapped out, still no luck. I have quit using the on board IDE
controller in favour of a SIIG card; the computer still locks up.
Should I save my files and do a clean install? What?
I am the one Mac user in this environment and I am loathe to have
consistent problems with this computer, since I am always touting the
excellence of my Macs (I have 3 G3's, one Wallstreet, and one G4).
I've never had problems with them like I've had with this one.
Note that when I first got it, it run 9 without a hitch. It took
several attempts over the course of several months to get it to
upgrade to Jaguar. It's taken the following upgrades with nary a
hitch. I don't recall it doing this in Panther.
What are the suggestions?
