I'm guessing different MAC address for wireless card was the key to
DHCP assigning a new IP.
Are you looking at the IP address on your Mac? Nothing sees that
address but your local network (your side of the cable modem.)
E-mail clients usually post the local IP address in the Received:
field. Typically it will show up there along with your real world
address.
If your address is in the range of:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255
Then you're getting a private address from your Linksys router.
The publicly visible IP address of your systems is that of the Linksys router.
