I now have a new IP address.

Having found the DHCP Release and Renew tabs on my Linksys (on the "status" page,

Cool! What model LinkSys do you have? (I'll add the info to me notes)

which I never go to instead of on the other advanced settings or"set-up" pages where I normally make changes)I gave it a whirl. Tried it with cable modem on. Always went back to same IP. Tried powering down modem and release/renew... reset. still came back the same.

The LinkSys was asking for a renewal of the old lease, not for a fresh new lease.

Then I got an idea.

I keep the wireless disabled until I need to use it. Started that up and made a wireless connection to the linksys router. Turned off the modem to reset. Unplugged the ethernet cable to my computer. Release/renew. Turned modem back on and initialized. Release/renew again. Voila, new IP address.

The Renew, with the cable modem off, failed. That told the LinkSys the lease was dead, so it probably reset the lease fields. Then the next Renew failed (asking for wrong IP) and automatically triggered a Request, which resulted in a new lease... :)
