Are Hansen writes, <I too thought you had a B&W by now, Yersinia... Must have been discussed at some point?>
About a year ago, I think, there was a discussion on this list about B&Ws and someone was listing their various merits as compared to a Beige, particularly that the B&W had both USB and ADB, plus the B&W also had Firewire. I was following that thread and made an idle comment that "maybe I should have bought a B&W instead of a Beige, except at the time I didn't know any better." Probably from that conversation, more than a few people must have gotten the idea that I ended up getting a B&W, I suppose. Well, for the record, since then I've also learned that a B&W won't even fit on my desk (my Beige is a desktop, not a minitower). Which is kind of too bad, because right now I'd actually have a shot at getting a free one. <Anyway, you are maybe right about problems with OSX on a Beige. Though a friend of mine runs Panther (10.3) just fine on his Beige Desktop G3. Well, he can't print to his ancient LaserWriter, but then he drops back into Classic or a real 9-boot.> What about his floppy drive, or doesn't he "need" that? See, I need to use mine, and I also use an external SCSI zip drive. <I believe you will run into much worse driver problems with any Linux distro, than OSX ever had. But, you might have fun, I haven't tried them.> I'm not going to have to worry about how to use my printer, floppy and Zip drives when I'm running Linux. Everything I do which involves those peripherals is all set up beautifully and running great on Mac OS 9.2.2. The reason why I want another drive from which I can run Linux is so I can do some online training courses, web only, and the site giving them specifies that only a bunch of named Windoze OS's or Linux will work with them. Other than that, I don't "need" Linux. <But.... couldn't you just put the terribly, horribly dangerous OSX on that separate HD of yours, for experimenting? Seems to me a more relevant training than any Linux? Cause sooner or later you will have to switch to X anyway, as the old Macs die away (...or switch to the Dark Side, but of course then everything will be worse than any Mac setup!!)> I don't have to PAY for Linux. Ubuntu is sending it to me for FREE. Money is a big issue for me...and no, I don't HAVE to go to OS X at any time, really. I don't discount the idea that MAYBE someday I'll WANT to, but I no longer see it as I'll "HAVE to." If worse comes to worse, or especially if it turns out I like Linux (to the point where I actually do try to "convert over" and do all that driver stuff so I can use my printer, floppy and Zip under Linux) -- or even if I don't, and I do choose to move to OS X, I still do have a CHOICE between OS X and Linux -- without having to even consider MicroBorg Windoze (which is definitely NOT an option, hahaha). <Love your signatures!> Awww, thanks. ;-) ~Yersinia. ________ "If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about him?" -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
