Don't give up on the Epson too soon. I have Epson II's,800's, 740's, and 880's that people gave up on, and I have up and running fine.
I love them because I can get the cartridges for less than $2 for black and white and less than $3 for color - yes, I typed that right! Sometimes just disconnecting everything and letting the printer sit unplugged will reset it and it will work fine. Other times you do have to reinstall drivers etc. OS x comes with most of the drivers you could need.
