OK, I guess I must have lucked out, as I've got a Beige G3. In the spring
or summer (I think: I do know it was within days of getting my 20-gig IDE
hard drive: that's what I needed it for), I also ordered an OS 9.1 CD. I
THINK I ordered it from OWC -- if not them, then Hardcore Mac --
definitely one or the other -- and I paid $30-something for it (I don't
recall the exact price anymore either). Anyway, I distinctly recall that
while "shopping" for the OS 9 CD, to "watch out" for the gray ones.
Having heard warnings on this list, I was careful to read the
descriptions. The one I ordered had specifically stated in its
description that it would work with ALL Macs capable of running OS 9, and
the picture of it on the website was orange and white. However, when the
package arrived -- it contained a *GRAY iMAC* OS 9.1 install CD, and I
was horrified. However, I tried it anyway, and much to my shocked but
pleasant surprise, it worked! I did have to do something a little strange
with it, though, in the "select destination disk" part of the install
procedure -- something like click "cancel" instead of "accept," when
"accept" seemed the actual logical choice -- but still, it worked (so I
didn't have to go make a stink to the place I bought it from, hahaha).
That's how I got 9.1 on the HD that's now running my Beige...
