Well Laura,
I don't want to come across as rude, but ...
have you actually read my message before replying??? You just need to
read the first line and you'll see that I am indeed talking about an
iMac G5! And my point is that the iMac G5 to me is indeed the right
choice, one reason being that your neighbour is not on this list;-).
With it I mean that you might end up becoming "the computer
technician", and unless you enjoy a lot of teas at your neighbour's,
something "pre-packaged" should fit the bill better. If she can't
afford a new sparkling iMac G5, even an older iMac G4 (800-900MHz)
could be better than spending heaps to upgrade a system with
potentially a lot of pitfalls, for example every new component you
install adds to the potential instability of the system ... CPU
upgrades might not be supported by newer OSes, add on cards might
interfere with deep sleep, and so on.
See Amanda's issues for example:

I've run Jaguar on a Wallstreet 266 with 192 MB. It runs, but
pretty slow. I also run Jaguar on Bryce (B&W G3-350) with 256 MB and
it's okay, but not a speed demon!!
The model you think about upgrading is one of the first G4s, and would
need some serious upgrading to run current applications smoothly. I
have a G4 QS 800 with 768 MB of RAM, SATA drives, Radeon 9800,
Superdrive, etc ... but unless I upgrade RAM and CPU further, Photoshop
is only running so fast, and not fast enough ...
When I mentioned a Powermac I meant to say that we on this list like to
play with the internals of our machines and don't mind a bit of
tinkering, so it might be natural for us to think straight away at
upgrading that G4. I for example wouldn't want an iMac for no reason.
If I can't put half a dozen drives, fill all RAM and PCI slots, have
the latest superdrive and video card and then see the powersupply die
in a cloud of smoke, well, I am not quite happy, however, I sometime
think that I must be a bit masochistic.
Hope this clarifies a bit my thought, well, at least a bit ;-)
And BTW, if you end up wanting to upgrade I would make sure it does at
least have:
900-1000 MHz CPU (>$150)
1GB of RAM (2x512MB PC133) (~$60)
200GB HDD ($55)
Superdrive (nowadays CDs just don't cut it anymore) (DVR110D $35)
USB 2.0 (cheap)
Faster video card, possibly at least Radeon 8500 or 9000. (~$50 for
R9000, $75 for R8500)
This is at least $350 if you shop on ebay an get bargains ...
also it would be nice to have a faster ATA or a SATA card.
Cheers
Andrea

We are talking about an imac g5,not a powermac...sorry...
but I would suggest she get the new but I just wanted to know what she
might get by with if
she can't get the money together...
It does not have to be the equivalent but at least better than she has
now.
thanks Laura

Honestly,
if your neighbour can afford it and she's not a tinkerer why not
buying the iMac G5? To match its performances with a Sawtooth you'd
end up spending more than buying new.
IMO, you choose the upgrade way for two reasons: 1) like to have a
machine with a lot of expansion slots and so you want get a tower, 2)
but can't afford that new shining G5.
(Real reason is that you like to play doctor and perform regular
surgery, medical check ups, resuscitation and finally euthanasia;-)
Otherwise a new machine comes with a warranty, all the new technology
built in, needs much less support, and will be supported by Apple for
much longer.

My neighbor has a g4 tower.
I don't have all the specs in front of me but
it has a dvd drive in it! (it came with it)
she is running os 9
I think it is a G4 (AGP Graphics) Sawtooth
I believe she has like a 350 mhz processor and I will have to check
on the ram.
She is considering buying a new imac g5, but in case she decides
not to, we are trying to see what options of upgrades there are for
her.
I would like her to upgrade to Tiger OR at least Panther.
I don't know where her original disks are.
Questions are
what would be a low end upgrade.... if you had to do one or 2
things before you installed x what would you do?
The computer freezes often, I can't figure out why.
I would LIKE to just delete everything off the disk but she will
still need os9 to run an older version of quickbooks.
Any suggestions would be GREAT!!
thanks
Laura
