Most often this is a problem with the Normal.dot template; Office 98 may only call it 'Normal'. This is the default New Document. You can delete it and Word will recreate a new one.
and B) is there any trick to make the CD drive actually *work* in this machine?
You can try cleaning it, but likely it's dead, needs replacement.
