I have a Yikes! that I got a DVD-ROM for, and the drive is very old, and doesn't rip CDs to iTunes without introducing a lot of errors. It still reads CD-ROM/DVD, but I suspect that it isn't long for this world. That being said, replacing the drive would be a way to fix the problem for good. Since it sounds like $$ might be tight right now (a good combo drive would set you backk ~$150, here are some workarounds: 1. Use an external optical drive (firewire or USB) 2. Network the laptop (airport or ethernet) and use an optical drive on the network to allow the Pismo to see the disks in the optical drive. 3. Boot in Firewire Target Disk mode. To do this (IIRC), shut down the Pismo, leave the computer you want to connect to running, and connect the two computers with a Firewire cable. Turn on the Pismo and hold down the "T" key. Of course, only the first of the workarounds allow the Pismo to boot from a CD. If you need to boot from a different source, you can use a Flash reader and a 2 GB flash card. Install X on the flash card, put the reader and the card into the Pismo, and select it as a startup disk in the Startup Disk control panel. Also can use any version iPod to do this, but don't do it for long without some sort of coolant for the iPod.
