There is one virus that can hurt PC hardware. That is Chernobyl. Chernobyl will flash your BIOS (think P-RAM) with garbage. Unless you have a modern BIOS with a "recovery" function, the only thing you can do after that is replace the BIOS chip. Chernobyl will only do its nastiness on Windows95 or Windows98, apparently.
