Hello, all. Now that the rush has passed, I can turn again to my
trials with my B&W.

[Marty Said:]
1) I find it odd that the motheboard has one connector maked "IDE" and
the other one marked "Ultra ATA". Is this implying that the first is
ATA/66 and the other is ATA/100?

[Dan said:]
> The on-board IDE is Ultra ATA/33.

[Marty continues:]
Hm. System Profiler notes the first channel as "ATA" and the second
channel as "ATA-3" which I understand equates to EIDE. My reference
<pcguide.com> also notes that ATA goes only to 33 MB/sec and can be
used with 40-wire ribbon cables, whereas all higher speeds require the
better noise rejection provided by 80-wire cables. And -both- of the
drive cables on the Yosemite are 80-pin, maybe chosen by apple "just
because". (*sigh*)

The more I read about this, the more clear it becomes that the ATA
world is a swamp of ambiguous protocol statements. Does anyone know of
a utility that will disclose the I/O modes being used between the mobo
ATA subsystem and a given drive?

[Dan noted:]
> Apple's TIL and the service manual have details.

[Marty:]
OK. <docs.info.apple.com> article 58226 is an overview of the specs,
but is mute to ATA bus details. Article 30510 leads to article 24342,
neither shedding light. Can anybody point me to a specific source for
a PDF service manual, or other TIL articles that go into details?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.

- Marty
