Yes, that is a bit of Catch-22. As you seem to know, the best - but most expensive - workaround is to get an AppleTalk-to-Ethernet adapter. But there are at least two other ways:

You could use Apple's "LaserBridge" software to let one of your old machines make the LaserWriter visible to the Ethernet network (and yes, the AppleTalk control panel should still be set to "Ethernet")

Or if your LW also has a parallell PC-type port you could get a parallel-to-USB adapter cable from any peecee shop and connect the LW to your QS. Download the free program "ESP Print" to make the printer visible to OSX. I guess you could then use OSX's normal printer sharing to the 9.1 machines across ethernet
