I have a beige G3 that I bought used. When I received it it had a
20GB hard drive as well as a 2GB hard drive that apparently became
disconnected in transit. I didn't need it so I left it alone until
yesterday, when I wanted to install more RAM and a 1GB Jaz drive.
I can't get the machine to recognize the Jaz drive. It does see the
2GB HD, which is connected to the same ribbon cable and the same
power cable (there are two connectors on each).
Hi Dominic,
I am presuming you have a rev. 2 beige G3? (which can recognize two HDs on
the same primary ATA bus), which would mean you want to chain the JAZ drive
with the CD-ROM (if this is not accurate, correct it so we have a better
idea of your system).
In either case, one of the devices must be set to master, and the other to
slave - traditionally in Macs, the CD-ROM is the master and the removable
media drive is set to slave - the other caveat is that the master device
must be at the end of the cable, with the slave in the middle port/socket on
the cable (the board's host port is the other end of the cable).
I do have a Rev. 2. I'd have to reopen the case to be sure, but when
I was in there the cable didn't look long enough to chain the Jaz to
the CD-ROM.
How do I set the devices to master/slave?
