(It was suspect on another Mac too).

So what make/model do you'all recommend for a replacment?

It's for my Smurf.

If wireless, ... do those generic USB-RFWireless stubs work on a Mac, or do they have to be Mac-specific? How fast do the mice go thru batteries?

I picked up a MS Intellimouse wireless mouse for $13.99 shipped from Surplus computers as a recommended deal from dealmac.com

I have had it on my home Mac for about 3 months now with an average of 3+ hours a day on and am still on the first set of batteries. They claim 6 ' range, but I have gone to about 12' and still have perfect functionality. It is a little bit larger than the Logitech corded mice that I use at work, but easy to get used to.

The receiver is USB with a 5' cable, iirc, and you do not need line of site from the mouse to it. I am guessing that you need to plug the receiver into a usb port on your computer or a powered hub, because it does not use any batteries. I have it plugged into a USB 2 card on my DA tower.

Just remember, how you interact with your computer is more important than a few megahertz. Give me a nicer monitor, KB and mouse over a slightly faster computer anyday. I have a heavy usb keyboard (almost as good as the Apple Extended ADB) a Logitech optical mouse and a 21" Sony flat crt hooked up to my hot rodded beige (G4 533, 512MB, Radeon 7000) at work and it wasn't until recently that I started hitting the wall with what I am asking the beige to do.

HTH,
Len
